American History is beautiful and ugly at the same time. We know the criminal treatment of African Americans which of course spilled over to Sports and Entertainment. These transgressions influenced athletes such as Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali and Althea Gibson to be vocal and outspoken about social issues. This thread is not to provide a long narrative about the history of activism in sports.
This thread is to ask YOU do you feel athletes of this generation are as vocal and visible as you’d like them to be. Are the athletes of today aware and conscious of social issues? Are the corporate sponsors hindering the athletes of today from being more active politically? I mean, your “BRAND” is basically the economic power your athleticism and marketing ability has generated. I’m sure agents, family members, friends and business interest would encourage their “cash cow” not to be too outspoken.
Maybe we expect too much from athletes. Maybe we should let them play their respected sports and not ask them to do anything we aren’t willing to do. Thoughts? *** T-Hanes
